Cork cheeses make judges' hearts melt

"West Cork cheesemakers - Gubbeen, Milleens and Durrus - have taken top honours at the British Cheese Awards...

...Former gold and silver medal winner, Jeffa Gill, who has been making Durrus Cheese since 1979, said she was pleases to have featured once again in the medals listing at the British Cheese Awards.

In addition to last year’s gold medal for the Durrus Mini, as well as silver for the Durrus Large, the dairy received a bronze medal this year for its cheese, which is made using traditional methods in the upland valley of Coomkeen, on the Sheep’s Head peninsula.

Jeffa Gill said winning awards has helped to increase the profile of the family business: ‘It always leads to an increase in sales and it is a welcome recognition of the standard of our cheese.’

She said the business, which has won medals and awards throughout the world, is fortunate to have two excellent local suppliers: Corney Buckley from Aughaville who has been supplying milk to Durrus Cheese for 25 years, as well as Noel Dukelow of Brahalish..."
