There is nothing else in the history of the Irish people that can be likened to the Great Famine, either for its immediate impact, or its legacy of emigration, cultural loss and decline of the Irish language. The population of Ireland was reduced by approximately 1.5 million during this tragic period and West Cork was one of the worst affected areas in Ireland. The Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition at Skibbereen Heritage Centre offers a comprehensive presentation of this pivotal period of Irish history via primary source accounts, audio-visual presentations, artifacts and display panels.

Lough Hyne, Irelands first Marine Nature Reserve, is a salt-water lake just 5km from Skibbereen town. Find out about its history, folklore and unique marine environment at Skibbereen Heritage Centre. Take a trip to the lake afterwards and enjoy the spectacular scenery from the nature trail at Knockomagh Hill.

Skibbereen Heritage Centre offers a full genealogy service for the area, with an experienced genealogist available by appointment.

The Centre also features an archaeology trail, information on the wildlife of the area, tea and coffee facilities, adjacent car park, full wheelchair access and, most importantly, a warm welcome to all its visitors!
