Self-Catering in Beara

Failte Ireland approved, 2 traditional style cottages in a secluded location in Castletownbere. Established in 1957 – an artists and writers retreat in the midst of untamed rugged scenery.

Located at Tir na Hilan, 2 miles outside of Castletownbere town on the side of Miskish mountain, nestling among the hedgerow overlooking Dunboy Castle, Berehaven Harbour, Bere Island and Bantry Bay, basking in the mildness of the Gulf Stream. Sheep and ponies are part of this place where oldstyle farming is still practised.

A place of fishermen and hill sheep farmers, a place of rest, creativity and outdoor activity. Archaeology and historical sites in stone circles, ogham stone, The Hag of Beara and our own ringfort, here on the land. Nearby there are 2 art galleries, cycling, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, deep sea angling, dolphin and seal watching, diving, golf, horse riding, ferry trip to Bere Island and Garnish, an old copper mine and museum, traditional music, etc.

The cottages are fully fitted with electric cooker, wooden floors, accommodation 5 people (1 double bed and 3 single beds). A cot and high chair are also available. Each cottage has a 13sq ft conservatory. Baby sitting can be arranged. Duvets, blankets, bed linen and towels are included. The kitchen is well equipped with delph, utensils, etc. The living room has an open fire (peat provided), satellite TV and DVD player. There is also outside furniture and a raised decking platform.

Locally, there is a wide variety of dining choices – pub food, pizza to elegant continental cuisine. Organic food can also be got at an open air market.

The cottages are located 20 miles from Glengarriff, 30 miles from Kenmare and Ring of Kerry and 55 miles from Kerry Airport.
