Lisselan Golf Club, Gardens & Fishing

The gardens designed in the Robinson Style were laid out by the Bence-Jones family in the mid 1800's to take advantage of the natural features and contours provided by the valley and the Argideen river running through it. The old walled garden has been transformed into a Fuchsia garden with many exotic species of Fuchsia being imported from all over the world. Golf Club: In 2004, Lisselan Golf Club has been formed with the course open to green fees and members, seven days a week. The par 72 layout (nine holes played from different tee boxes) consists of 4 par 5, 4 par 3 and 10 par 4 holes. The course has many unique features such as getting on specially modified railcar from green to tee on two prestigious holes and taking a ferry across the Argideen river to reach the dramatic and picturesque 8(17th) green! Great membership offers now available. Fishing: River fishing for salmon and sea trout on the best private stretches of the river Argideen. One mile of double bank fishing with 10 named pools and a mile of single bank fishing. The river has one of the best wild, naturally reproducing stocks of salmon and sea-trout in the south-west of Ireland. Lisselan is Open 7 days 8am - dusk. Prices vary therefore check out our website on www.lisselan.com

Bantry

Sheepshead Way Ltd

The Sheeps Head Way, known as Slí Mhuintir Bhaire in Irish, is a long distance walking route of over 150 km encompassing the Sheeps Head Peninsula and the general Bantry area. Whiddy Island, in Bantry Bay, has a Walk and is connected by ferry to the mainland. From Drimoleague to the east, the Mealagh valley and Kealkil, Carriganass Castle with links to the Beara Breifne Way and which leads to Gougane Barra; local communities in these areas have all developed their own walks which are linked with The Sheeps Head Way. The walker can experience spectacular views from various ridges, shoreline, cliff tops, and lake sides. As well as our native wildlife and rare wildflowers and plants, one can often observe dolphins and seals, sometimes whales, at sea. The Walks also include the numerous monastic, archaeological and historical sites in the area where possible. Starting in Bantry the route follows the ridge of Bantry Bay west along the Goats Path Road, all the way to Sheeps Headthe end of the Peninsula. It then turns south and follows the contours of Dunmanus Bay through Kilcrohane, Ahakista and Durrus before returning to Bantry. The total length of the ring is around 180 km and it can be completed in about four days walking. There are several very accessible loop walks of shorter distances, in addition to ten Fáilte Ireland Loop Walks with trail heads at Carriganass, Mealagh, Drimoleague, Bantry, Ahakista, Kilcrohane, the Blackgate and Sheeps Head. These trails are colour coded and afford the self guided walker a wide variety of walking experiences from one to seven hours duration. Consult the guide to the Sheeps Head Way which is available from numerous local outlets and for the Eastern routes, consult the Drimoleague Heritage Walkway booklet.

Drimoleague Walkways image

Drimoleague Walkways

A large sign on the approach to Drimoleague describes the village as being "the heart of West Cork". We believe this well describes the place. The distinctiveness that causes West Cork to be known as "a place apart" can be found here in full blossom, yet it remains largely undiscovered by the average visitor, who prefers to keep nearer to the coast.
