The Irish experience: a visit to my family's past

Touching down at shannon Airport and musing over the unfamiliar name of the Irish airline Aer Lingus. I presumed this would be a fun vacation of blindingly green views and difficult-to-understand accents.

Having just flown in from a three-day sightseeing pit stop in London, my family met my grandparents at the gate, thrilled to be touring the southwest coast of Ireland for the next week. Together, we would be visiting the areas where my great-grandparents had lived before emigrating to the United States.

So, wheeling our suitcases out of the airport and piling ourselves into a large blue Volkswagen minivan, we dove into the culture of the Emerald Isle.

My first impression of the green wonderland was that for having such narrow roads, the Irish maintained extremely high speed limits that made rounding the ever-so-plentiful blind corners highly nerve-wracking. We also noticed the large abundance of farm animals; about every five feet one could find a cow, sheep, horse or mule edging its way into the street.
